Our Story: The Fifth Act Company
Discover the passion, people, and purpose behind The Fifth Act Company, a contemporary theatre production company committed to original, emotionally driven storytelling.

Our founding vision
The Fifth Act Company, a contemporary theatre company, was founded by Tyler Cowie, driven by a desire to create original, emotionally driven stage productions. Focused on compelling storytelling, rich character development, and evocative place-based narratives, Tyler's journey began during his university training. Inspired by independent theatre, he realised that powerful, original theatre could be created outside traditional institutional frameworks.
Our company exists to make original work freely and collaboratively, embodying the belief that theatre can be created anywhere without needing permission. Our current production, William Street, is set to premiere in Oxford before its transfer to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. This website serves as both a company hub and a production showcase, with dedicated sections for the show, performance dates, tickets, creatives, and press information. The design aims to be modern, minimal, and deeply rooted in the essence of theatre.

Meet our collaborative team
The Fifth Act Company was initially founded by three Oxford Brookes students, studying Drama, Theatre, and Acting, who began collaborating while training at university. The team later expanded with the addition of Chloe Downes, who joined as the writer and quickly became a key creative voice within the group.
Our core team brings together diverse backgrounds and training experiences, enriching our work with a wide range of perspectives. Despite these differences, we are united by a shared commitment to collaboration, experimentation, and creating original theatre together. Each member contributes a distinct strength—whether in performance, direction, or writing—allowing the company to develop work collectively, rather than through a single authorial voice. This collaborative approach is central to The Fifth Act Company's identity and shapes the creation of all our productions, including William Street.

Our impact and aspirations
At The Fifth Act Company, we aspire to create work that feels immediate, human, and emotionally honest, leaving an impact that resonates with audiences long after the performance ends. Our goal is to craft theatre that connects deeply through story, character, and a strong sense of place, moving beyond mere spectacle.
For our audiences, we hope to foster a sense of recognition and reflection—creating work that feels deeply personal, even when it is fictional. For the wider theatre world, we aim to contribute to a culture of independent, collaborative creation, where emerging artists feel empowered to produce work outside traditional institutional pathways. At its core, The Fifth Act Company is driven by the belief that theatre should remain accessible, experimental, and rooted in genuine collaboration. We hope our work encourages other young artists to trust their ideas, create independently, and see theatre as something that can be built from wherever they are.
